Steven Morant
Architectural Sculpture Research Project

Steven Morant

Steven’s residency involved the carving of a six‐fold enlargement of a life‐size human head (in high‐density, fire‐retardant polystyrene) as an exercise in sculptural enlargement. The process raised questions about how such enlargements were carried out throughout history.

How, for example, were the carvers on the right‐hand of the Sphinx's nose able to reflect, so precisely, what had been done on the left‐hand side?

The exercise relates to Steven’s interest in architectural sculpture as an independent discipline and in such matters as the adjustment of proportions and definition which may be necessary to enable a sculpture placed high up on a building to be clearly legible from a distance. It also related to Steven’s interest in sculptures large enough to contain useable space.
